Quarterfinals (FAQs)
- How is the contest structured?
The contest is held on Zoom and consists of two rounds:
- Tamil Round: All participants compete in the Tamil round first.
- English Round: Once every participant has completed the Tamil round, the English round begins.
Participants are required to remain in the Zoom session throughout the contest as this contest is designed as a learning experience. By staying through both the Tamil and English rounds, participants not only showcase their own skills but also learn from and enjoy the stories of others.
- Are the Tamil and English rounds held in one sitting or at separate times?
Each pool completes both rounds in a single scheduled session, according to its assigned pool timetable.
- Is the Zoom session open to everyone?
Yes. The Zoom session is public, and anyone may join as an observer.
Arumbugal Category
- How many Kurals should be selected?
Participants must choose 2 Kurals from their allocated 35 Kurals, each from a different Adhigaram.
- Can Participants use the same 2 Kurals for both Tamil and English rounds?
Yes, Arumbugal Participants can use the same set of 2 Kurals for both rounds.
- What format should Arumbugal Participants use to present?
Students will narrate a story/stories in each round—first in Tamil, then in English. They can say one story per Kural or connect 2 Kurals into one story. Stories can be from their own life or generic moral stories, but must reflect American life.
- How long is each Arumbugal round?
Each round is 5 minutes maximum per participant.
- Is presentation required for Arumbugal round?
No. Presentation is only for Mottugal & Malargal. Arumbgal, have to just narrate the story.
- What is the submission requirement for Arumbugal?
Students must submit stories in text format using the official submission form in the status page. Only approved stories will be allowed during the Zoom session.
- What is the last date to submit stories?
All submissions must be sent on or before April 25th.
- How many Kurals must Participants include in their papers?
Mottugal: 5 Kurals per paper (Tamil & English), chosen from 70 Kurals. Malargal: 5 Kurals per paper (Tamil & English), chosen from 125 Kurals. Note: Kurals must be from 5 different Adhigarams.
- Can the same Kurals be used for both Tamil & English rounds?
Yes. Based on parent’s feedback and request, we are allowing the same 5 Kurals in both Tamil & English
- What is the format of presentation?
Participants will prepare slides (PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides) and present their papers during a public Zoom session—first in Tamil, then in English. A sample Powerpoint template is provided – Link to the Powerpoint Template.
- How long is each Mottugal or Malargal round?
Each round has a 7-minute limit per participant.
- What is the additional requirement for Malargal students?
In addition to the presentation, Malargal Participants must recite the 25 additional Kurals provided to them. Meaning is not required for Quarterfinals.
- What are the submission requirements?
Participants must submit their presentation slides in advance. All submissions must be received on or before April 25th. Only approved slides can be used during the Zoom session. Please use the form in the status page (https://kuraltheni.com/status/) to upload the PDF version of the presentations.
