திருக்குறள்

நகையுள்ளும் இன்னாது இகழ்ச்சி பகையுள்ளும்
பண்புஉள பாடறிவார் மாட்டு.

பொருள்: ஒருவனை இகழ்ந்து பேசுதல் விளையாட்டிலும் துன்பம் தருவதாகும், பிறருடைய இயல்பை அறிந்து நடப்பவரிடத்தில் பகைமையிலும் நல்லப் பண்புகள் உள்ளன.

For contempt offends even in jest.

English Meaning: Reproach is painful to one even in sport; those (therefore) who know the nature of others exhibit (pleasing) qualities even when they are hated.
